Are Solar Roofing Panels Cost Effective?

There are a lot of internet articles about the benefits of solar roofing systems and how they save you a lot of money on your power but do not believe everything you read. There are many companies trying to sell their products and will say anything to separate you from your hard earned money. If you are a home owner in Columbus GA, Phenix City AL and Harris County, and thinking of installing a solar roofing system, you should weigh the advantages and disadvantages before spending the huge initial cost. First question that comes to my mind is how long before the solar roof pays for itself? What is the life expectancy after it pays for itself?

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Solar Roofs

If you live in a part of the US that does not have much sun year all year, then installing a solar roofing system for your roof is not feasible. If you generate more electricity than you use, you can sell the excess back to your local power company. Can increase the value of your home and lower your electric bill but does not work for all roofs.

Compared to years ago solar roofing panels have come down in price but the most important question as stated above is after I save the amount I paid for my system, how much longer will my solar roof last and what condition will it be in? Will I have to invest more money in repairs and maintenance after it pays for itself? These are questions that seem hard to find an answer for.

Tesla has been the leader so far in the total electric vehicle market and is now in the solar roofing market as well. They are the only company I would trust to have a reliable solar system for my roof. Tesla would typically charge around $80,000 for a 10 KW solar roofing system on a 1,900 square foot roof. I do not know what the average power bill for this size home but lets say $250 per month on average and in 25 years would be a total of $75,000. So it would take you 25 years to break even and at the end of its life expectancy for your solar roofing system. You can sell your excess electricity back to the local power company if they will take it and depending if you ever have any excess electricity. Are you going to be dependent on your local electric power company during the long winters with not much sun at all? It is conceivable that it may take you longer than the life expectancy of your solar roof system to break even. The only way it might be advantageous for a solar roof is if electricity prices rise dramatically in the future or if prices come down a lot on this type of roofing.

If your existing roof has 10 more years of life, you would not want to put 30 year solar shingles on it. So the initial cost of a solar roofing system would also include the price of a new roof and the initial cost has just soared making the return on investment even longer.

Conclusion

Unless the price on solar roofing comes down or electricity prices soar, I would not recommend investing in this type roofing in Phenix City AL, Harris County GA or Columbus GA. There are a lot of articles on the internet stating the many benefits of having a solar roof but do not let the media influence your decision without doing all the research to find out if you would benefit from a solar roofing system for your home.
